ABOUT

Rafael Martinez,

LCSW, GC-C.

A bilingual therapist born in Brownsville, raised in Matamoros, working with adults across Texas by telehealth.

Hi, I'm Rafael.

I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Certified Grief Counselor. I work with adults across Texas — in English, in Spanish, and sometimes in the mix of both that a lot of us actually grew up speaking.

I was born in Brownsville and raised in Matamoros. That's not a line in a bio — it's how I think. The borderlands shape how I understand family, identity, faith, language, immigration, grief, and the way people hold contradiction. If you're from this part of the world, or from a community that lives in more than one culture, you don't have to explain the basics to me.

What I bring to the room

I believe therapy works best when it feels like a genuine conversation. My approach is warm, direct, and collaborative. I will not hide behind clinical jargon or tell you how you should live your life. Instead, I will share my observations honestly, ask thoughtful questions, and create a space where you can explore what matters most, even when those conversations are challenging.

My practice is LGBTQ+ affirming and welcoming of diverse relationship structures, including polyamorous and consensually nonmonogamous relationships, as well as kink and sex positive perspectives. I regularly support clients navigating concerns related to sexuality, intimacy, identity, and relationships within my scope of practice as an LCSW. If a concern would be better served by someone with a different area of expertise, I will be transparent about that and help connect you with the right provider.

How I think about therapy

I draw from cognitive behavioral, humanistic, psychodynamic, and somatic approaches because no single method fits everyone. Together, we'll explore your thoughts, emotions, life experiences, and the ways your body responds to stress and difficult experiences. We'll use the approaches that best support your goals at each stage of the process.

Therapy is not about finding quick answers or becoming a perfect version of yourself. It is a process of gaining insight, building self awareness, and making meaningful changes that align with the life you want to live. My role is to help you better understand yourself, navigate difficult moments with greater clarity, and make choices that feel authentic and sustainable.

Why Aurora Path

The name is for the aurora borealis — light that emerges in darkness, natural, never forced. The path is the therapy itself: walked, not rushed. The star in the logo is for clarity — the moments when something finally becomes visible. The colors mirror the aurora: deep teal night sky, softer teal and purple lights. It's the closest thing I could put into an image for what the work actually feels like when it's working.
